The Centre for Dementia aims to improve the lives of people with dementia and their carers, through high quality, useful research looking at how people with dementia spend their time and what helps them to get quality from life.

Researchers are focused on implementing things that work, and use their expertise to raise awareness among the general public about ageing and dementia.

Dementia is a term that is used to describe a collection of symptoms, including memory loss, problems with reasoning, perception and communication skills. Dementia is a progressive condition, which means the symptoms are likely to get worse over time. It therefore has particular implications for family members who are providing care and are directly affected.

The number of people with dementia is increasing and presents a significant and urgent challenge to health and social care, which is why dementia research is so important and potentially useful.

There is no cure for dementia, the best that we have at the moment is good care, and understanding what good care looks like is a major theme within the Centre.

The Doctorial Training Centre (DTC), which has been funded by a multi-million-pound investment from Alzheimer's Society, to champion the next generation of Lewy body dementia (LBD) researchers – a move which is essential to progressing much-needed dementia research.

Centre for Dementia researcher Dr Emma Broome beat off stiff competition to represent Early Career Researchers (ECRs) in a national dementia research group.

Prof Tom Dening and Dr Helen Henshaw (as joint Principal Investigators) alongside Dr Emma Broome (Co-investigator) have successfully obtained a grant of £52,377.45 from the NIHR CRN East Midlands for a project to develop a strategic direction in the region for research needed in the field of dementia and hearing loss. The new project will commence in early 2022.

Today, Director of the Centre for Dementia, Professor Tom Dening has been addressing old-age psychiatrists nationwide, at a meeting chaired by Professor Alistair Burns of NHS England. He's been sharing his thoughts on the recently published World Alzheimer's Report.
