The choir was established by the IMH in 2013 to promote health and wellbeing. The Choir has been set up in partnership with the Royal Concert Hall, where it meets most Thursdays. The Choir exists primarily so that people can sing together and enjoy themselves. 

It is believed that singing with others for enjoyment may have positive effects on one’s health and wellbeing. Having a recognised ability to be able to sing is not a prerequisite for membership. The Choir enables social interaction and the pleasure of being creative and expressing oneself in the company of others.

Aims:

• Collaboratively create a community-based choir that is inclusive for people who might be vulnerable, isolated, or lacking in confidence
• Create a network that is focused upon enjoyment and friendship
• Make this enterprise sustainable
• Embed a research project within the choir

Progress:

• Pro bono hire of meeting space from the Royal Centre, Nottingham
• 130 attendees
• Several performances including the IMH Christmas celebrations, Royal Centre open day, Highbury Hospital summer fayre and carol singing at Nottingham Contemporary
• Interviews and evaluation for a Masters student research project
• Received funding from the Arts Council of £15,000 (October 2015).
