The Centre for Mood Disorders aims to further the understanding of health issues such as depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder and related problems such as health anxiety and repeat self-harm.

Led by Professor Richard Morriss, professor of psychiatry and community mental health, the Centre integrates research and education across the University of Nottingham, Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, service users and members of the public. The Centre works with other partners regionally, nationally and internationally.

Mood disorders are collectively the biggest cause of years lived with disability in the world. One in four people suffer from these problems at some point in their life, and some suffer intermittently throughout their life. They also represent the biggest cause of mortality among all mental health problems, not just from suicide but also from other physical health problems, notably from poor cardiovascular health.

Institute researcher Dr Sam Malins, lead clinical psychologist for the East Midlands Cancer Alliance Integrated Training and Video Therapy Service, was on BBC Radio Nottingham last week.

NEUROMOD+ is a new network aiming to build capacity and bring together research, industry, clinical and patient communities to support the co-creation of novel neuromodulation therapies.
