A trial participant from the BRIGhTMIND project spoke to the BBC East Midlands news team about their experience of being part of the pioneering trial to evaluate new solutions for treatment resistant depression.

Rachel shared her story of living with depression since her teens, alongside Professor Richard Morriss and Dr Sudheer Lankappa who explained more about the impact this project could have for people living with depression.

The BRIGhTMIND trial has been researching the effectiveness of two types of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) treatments designed to help people who are experiencing depression for which traditional treatments like medication and talking therapies or counselling haven’t worked. This type of depression is called treatment resistant depression.

The BRIGhTMIND team are looking to recruit new volunteers to take part in the trial in Nottingham, Newcastle and London. To take part in the trial you must:

  • 18 or over.
  • Living with treatment resistant depression – eg. someone for whom at least two treatments you’ve tried haven’t worked, which means you have treatment resistant depression.
  • Happy to take part in treatment involving an MRI scan and 20 sessions of TMS.

If you are eligible and wish to take part in the study, no changes will be made to your current medication or treatment and this will not affect the standard of care you receive from your usual doctors and nurses.
