ExTRAPPOLATE - Institute of Mental Health

The ExTRAPPOLATE project aimed to co-create a computer-based tool to enable mental health practitioners to reflect on their own practice. The project involved using natural language processing and machine learning to analyse the language in psychotherapy transcripts. Stakeholders were involved throughout the project to understand concerns about the approach and help shape the project.

Our original design for the interface of the tool began with a set of Powerpoint slides. These can be viewed in a video which we made available to our workshop attendees.

We used Natural Language Processing to analyse the language from psychotherapy sessions. Natural Language Processing involves the use of computers to pick out different features of a section of text (for example, how long the sentences are, how many words related to sentiment there are, etc) and put these into numbers.

The ExTRAPPOLATE team, led by Dr Jacob Andrews, consists of researchers from a broad range of disciplines, along with public involvement volunteers and commercial partners.
