Foundations in Dementia is a free, online course on the FutureLearn platform that begins on 27th January, 2020.  It covers six themes, in 2-3 hours of self-directed learning per week, over six weeks.

The six themes are:

  • Week 1 - Inside the brain
  • Week 2 - Assessment and treatment
  • Week 3 - Law and ethics
  • Week 4 - Communication skills
  • Week 5 - Family and friends
  • Week 6 - Living well with dementia and end of life care

The presenters come from a wide range of academic and clinical professional backgrounds. Videos include family carers with extensive experience of supporting loved ones with dementia.  The course spans key topics, from prevention and diagnosis to end of life care. Research highlights feature dementia experts from the University of Nottingham. You will learn to understand people with dementia and to respond appropriately as a professional or family supporter. Whatever your role in dementia care, by engaging with the resources and exchanging views with others on this course, you will gain knowledge, skills, and confidence to support people with dementia effectively.
