Prisons are challenging environments in which to work, with major concerns about staff safety and associated pressures on their mental health. Considerable research has been done on these matters in prison officers, however, healthcare staff in prisons have been largely overlooked.

The SMARTSTAFF study, funded by the Medical Protection Society, will address this important gap by exploring the mental health, safety, and job satisfaction of UK prison healthcare staff. We will use online surveys to establish for the first time a comprehensive national picture of these factors, and explore possible differences between healthcare professions, demographic factors, and type of prison. In a select group of participants, we will do extended interviews to explore the issues in more depth.

Take part in the SMARTSTAFF Study

We are inviting you to take part in the SMARTSTAFF Study (Safety, Mental health, and Retention of healthcare Staff in UK prisons)– a University of Nottingham research project exploring the safety, mental health, and well-being of healthcare staff working in UK prisons.

About the Study

Prison healthcare can be a challenging environment, with high demands and unique pressures. This study aims to better understand staff experiences, mental health, and job satisfaction, and to identify ways to improve wellbeing and retention in this essential part of NHS services.

What’s Involved

• You will be asked to complete 4 short online surveys (about 10 minutes each, 30–40 minutes in total)
• Some participants may also be invited to take part in a 30–45 minute online interview to discuss experiences in more detail
• Participation is entirely voluntary, and you may withdraw at any time
• All information will remain confidential and securely stored in accordance with UK data protection laws.

Your Reward

• Participants who complete all four surveys will be entered into a prize draw to win 1 of 5 £100 retail vouchers
• Interview participants will also receive a £25 reimbursement for their time.
