This webinar will provide an update on the process of reform of mental health law which was set in train with the publication of the Wessely Report back in 2018. The previous government introduced a Bill to implement most of the recommendations in the Report in 2022. Although that Bill had not completed its parliamentary passage by the time of the 2024 general election, the current government continued along the reform path and re-introduced the Bill in a slightly reworked version later in 2024. This Bill is currently working its way through Parliament. It is designed to make significant changes to the law and policy currently contained in the Mental Health Act 1983.

This two-hour webinar will take the form of a number of short presentations on key aspects of the Bill by colleagues from the School of Law and the Centre for Mental Health and Human Rights in the Institute of Mental Health, with time set aside for questions and discussion.
