Professor Eddie Kane, director of our Centre for Health and Justice, is ‘academic rapporteur’ at a global International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol) workshop.

The workshop, held at the World Trade Centre in The Hague, Netherlands, included invited delegates from police forces worldwide. The aim of the event was to begin the development of a ‘playbook’ for forces to develop their strategies and operational tactics to counteract criminal usage of emerging technologies and identify where they could benefit from the positive use of such technology.

“We are working with Interpol on assessing future crime threats. Many of these involve Organised Crime Groups and target vulnerable people, trafficking and exploiting them. The Hague meeting focused on the threats and opportunities from emerging technologies including well publicised ones like Artificial Intelligence in all its forms, but also a complex mix of technologies used to enable and potentially prevent crime. Professor Kane’s role included positively challenging approaches and conclusions, and to summarise sessions and the event overall. There is a follow up meeting in late March 2023 to finalise the playbook, after which it will be issued to 192 member countries forces.
